Help 'Give Us a Leg Up'!

Please see bottom of page for ways to donate

2017 was the 20th Anniversary of the re-opening of The Gordon Highlanders Museum. It’s been a tremendous success.  Visit Scotland grade us as the only 5* Attraction in Aberdeen.

However, we now need 'A Leg Up'* to cope with the slowdown in Aberdeen’s economy.  Without assistance, all that we have achieved, impressive though it is, will be in jeopardy.

[*'A Leg Up' refers to the phrase used in the military to support or assist friends or collegues when in need]

A Fantastic Community Asset for the North East

Even during the economic downturn we have been making good progress – the Museum’s Collection continues to grow and our regular programme of temporary exhibitions have all featured in the medial including STV and BBC TV.  As a result of donations and grants we have recently introduced new interactive displays, have digitised the Regimental Magazine as a research resource, provided free wifi and have fielded a Museum app that makes use of iBeacons to provide additional information to our visitors as they walk around the Museum and its gardens.  Details of most of our Collection are on line.  We have embraced the opportunities provided by the internet and social media.  The results are positive: since 2014 our visitor numbers are up by 18% and our income from admissions by 61%.

We have made a significant investment in our educational capability, thanks to a now completed four year sponsorship programme.  We have much better facilities in the Education Room and brand new learning material supplemented by an excellent handling collection.  We have also been able to employ a part time member of staff who is also a World War One re-enactor.  With the Friends of The Gordon Highlanders Museum providing travel grants, our school slots are now fully booked.  In 2016 1646 school children from 52 schools across the North East visited the Museum and 2017 looks to be even better.

Another major donation meant we were able to conduct a significant refurbishment of the Tea Room.  It is a fantastic resource for the Museum and Aberdeen.  In late 2016 it was a category finalist in the Evening Express Retailer Awards.  Since it re-opened over the last 3 years we have seen our usage increase by 17% and our income from the Tea Room by 25%.

But Now We Need Your Help....

However, our main source of income has always been from the services that we supply to Aberdeen companies through conferences, training days and dinners.  This has collapsed in line with the collapse in the oil price.  In three years our income here has reduced by almost 60% and our profits by nearly 80%.  For 2016 we had expected this income to at least remain static and not deteriorate further.  Instead we have had a cruel shock: 2016 has been twice as bad as 2015 which until then had been our worst year.  Our investment in improved facilities for our corporate clients has not made the difference we had hoped.  We do not expect to be back where we were in 2014 before 2020.

This is why we are asking for a leg up now.  We need to raise £100,000 each year for the next three years.

Your Small Contribution Will Mean a lot!

We will achieve this if all our friends and supporters commit to give a minimum of £10 a month to the Museum for three years.  Gift aid will turn such a contribution into £150 a year so if you would like to add 25% to your donation for no extra cost please download a copy of the Gift Aid Form here or via the link below. If we don’t succeed, we will have to implement cost savings which will put at risk all our achievements to date.

You can help by donating via the various ways outlined below.
